Jan. 9, 2009 — DOE Issues Final Rule Establishing Commercial Refrigeration Standards
The U.S. Department of Energy published a final rule on Jan. 9, 2009 that establishes energy conservation standards for commercial refrigeration equipment. The energy conservation standards established in the final rule will be applicable to products manufactured on or after January 1, 2012.

This equipment includes commercial ice-cream freezers; self-contained commercial refrigerators, commercial freezers, and commercial refrigerator-freezers without doors; and remote condensing commercial refrigerators, commercial freezers, and commercial refrigerator-freezers.

Jan. 1, 2009 — Walk-in Cooler and Freezer Prescriptive Efficiency Standard Goes Into Effectwalk-in cooler
Walk-in freezers and coolers manufactured on or after Jan. 1, 2009 must comply with new federal prescriptive energy efficiency measures. The new national standard was developed through an agreement reached between AHRI and the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and it was incorporated into the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (H.R.6). The new standard is expected to reduce average walk-in energy use by over 40 percent through requirements for insulation levels, motor types, and use of automatic door-closers.

To help aid awareness and compliance with this law, AHRI has developed a checklist for equipment installers and owners that outlines the required energy efficiency boosting measures.
