Learn About Certification
What is Certification and Why is it Important?
With today’s high energy prices and the need to reduce peak electrical demand, the certification of air conditioning and commercial refrigeration equipment performance is critical. It instills consumer confidence that manufacturers’ performance claims are accurate.
Independently Measured and Verified
Regulators at the federal, state and local levels are increasingly motivated to depend upon AHRI for the accurate and unbiased evaluation of HVACR equipment. AHRI’s certification programs demonstrate to the government that performance claims have been independently measured and verified. Upon verification, the AHRI Certified
®
mark is applied to the product to serve as a visual statement of conformance.
In 2009, AHRI unveiled a new unified mark to identify heating, ventilation, air conditioning and commercial refrigeration products that have achieved third-party certification of their performance ratings.
The new mark will replace the ARI Performance Certified, GAMA Efficiency Rating Certified and I=B=R marks, but these changes will be made according to an
implementation schedule
that provides enough time to bring all certification programs into compliance with internationally recognized accreditations. HVACR equipment and components formerly bearing the ARI Performance Certified mark have already transitioned to the new mark, as have most of the former GAMA marks. All programs will transition to the new mark by January 1, 2012.
Recognized the World Over
AHRI’s certification programs comply with
ISO Guide 65
, which sets the general international requirements for bodies operating product certification systems. Because of this recognition, AHRI’s standards and certification programs are accepted and specified all over the world.
In addition, to facilitate movement of AHRI Certified
®
products across borders without the need for additional testing, AHRI has developed mutual recognition agreements with other certification bodies such as the
Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers
, Korea Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Assessment Center and Mexico's
Asociación de Normalización y Certificación A.C
.
These agreements grant the organizations the license to utilize all AHRI standards for the development of industry standards in their countries.
