Agenda-at-a-Glance

An overview of the Policy Symposium agenda.

Monday, May 20

On November 5, who will be elected President of the United States? Who will control Congress, and will there be changes in the state houses? What issues will matter most to voters? Where are the battlegrounds? Who will show up at the polls? Can Republicans win the Senate?  Will Democrats re-take the House? To provide insight into these questions, we’ll welcome our keynote speaker, Nathan Gonzales, Editor and Publisher of Inside Elections and an election analyst for CQ Roll Call.

When it comes to policymaking, the media has an important role to play in presenting the pros and cons of policy proposals. Those in the policy debate who have longstanding, trustworthy relationships with reporters can increase the odds of persuading them to positively cover the issues involved. The journalists on this panel will talk about their experiences covering Congress and the White House, the importance of relationships, and how they view their role with respect to policymaking.

    Moderator:
Francis Dietz, Vice President of Public Affairs, AHRI

    Panelists:

    • Brian Dabbs, E&E News & POLITICO
    • Additional panelists to be announced

In this session, Bracewell partner Scott Segal will talk with former federal policymakers:

    • Ryan Jackson, former EPA Chief of Staff (American Chemistry Council)
    • Richard Russell, former Staff Director on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee (National Mining Association)

This panel will discuss how to advance AHRI’s regulatory strategy and policy interests, ensure brand integrity, use political means to achieve regulatory ends, and use best practices for engaging legislators in regulatory issues.

Samantha Slater, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, AHRI

    Panelists:

Don’t miss the chance to hear her advice to industry when working with the administration and her outlook on successful climate policy going forward!

This panel will discuss The Administrative Procedures Act, an insider’s view of the Federal rulemaking process, interagency review and political considerations, and best practices in regulatory proceedings.

What are the considerations and debates that occur at the Forrestal Building (DOE) and 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue (EPA) or inside the Capitol or the White House when it comes to energy and climate policymaking? This panel of DOE, EPA, Congressional, and White House staff will discuss the legislative and rulemaking processes and policy considerations, including opportunities for industry input.
