Commercial Package Boilers

Department of Energy

Since 1994, the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) has regulated the energy efficiency level of commercial packaged boilers. These regulated products are low pressure packaged boilers that supply steam or hot water for buildings, primarily for heating and space conditioning applications. Goods in this industrial equipment category share a maximum rated input capacity that is greater than or equal to 300,000 Btu/h. Compliance with the most recent amended standards established for commercial packaged boilers will be required starting January 10, 2023.

There is no regulation in development at this time.

Early Assessment Review; Request for Information (RFI) pertaining to Test Procedures for Commercial Package Boilers

Summary: “Consistent with the requirements under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), as amended, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is examining whether to amend the current test procedure in place for commercial packaged boilers found at 10 CFR 431 subpart E.  As a result of this effort, DOE may propose and amend the test procedures for this equipment or issue a determination that no amendments to the current test procedures are required. Once completed, this rulemaking will fulfill DOE’s statutory obligation to either propose amended test procedures for this equipment or determine that the existing test procedures do not need to be amended. Under statute, these test procedures are subject to a 7-year look-back period.”

    Standard Level

These standards cover gas-fired and oil-fired packaged low-pressure steam and hot water boilers that are industrial equipment with maximum rated input capacities of 300,000 Btu/h or more, which are disturbed in commerce for: (1) heating or space conditioning in buildings or (2) for service water heating in buildings, but do not meet the definition of "hot water supply boiler."
