Hearth Products

Department of Energy

The Department of Energy (DOE) has proposed to define a hearth product as a gas-fired appliance that may or may not provide space heating directly to the space in which it is installed and which provides an aesthetic appeal by simulating a solid-fueled fireplace.

Energy Conservation Standards for Hearth Products

Summary: DOE is conducting a rulemaking to analyze potential energy conservation standards for hearth products. DOE is developing this rulemaking concurrent with its coverage determination for these products.

Determination of Hearth Products as a Covered Consumer Product

Summary: DOE has tentatively determined that hearth products qualify as a covered product under part A of title III of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), as amended. More specifically, DOE has tentatively determined that hearth products meet the criteria for covered products because classifying products of such type as covered products is necessary or appropriate to carry out the purposes of EPCA (which is to improve the efficiency of covered consumer products to conserve the energy resources of the Nation) and the average annual U.S. household energy use for hearth products is likely to exceed 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year.
